SEO you own, not SEO you rent
Most "SEO tools" just rent you your own traffic back every month. Here's what to build once instead so your rankings stay yours.
Every few weeks a founder shows us a $99/month SEO dashboard and asks if it’s worth it. Usually it isn’t. The rankings it “tracks” are the same numbers Google Search Console gives you for free, dressed up in a nicer chart.
What actually moves rankings
Three things, in order.
1. Speed
A page that loads in under 1.5 seconds beats a prettier one that takes four. Google measures it, and so do your customers’ thumbs — speed is one of the design choices that quietly drive conversions.
2. Structure
Clean headings, real titles, one clear topic per page. Boring, permanent, free.
3. Content people actually search for
Write the answer to the question your customer types at 11pm. Once. It keeps working while you sleep.
The rent trap
If your ranking stops the day you cancel the tool, you were renting, not ranking.
Own your content, own the site itself, own your Search Console. The dashboard is optional. The fundamentals are not.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a paid SEO tool to rank on Google?
No. Google Search Console gives you your real ranking and click data for free. Paid tools mostly repackage that same data. Spend on speed and content first; add a tool only when you have a specific job it does that Search Console can't.
What's the single biggest ranking factor I control?
Page speed. A site that loads in under 1.5 seconds beats a prettier one that takes four — Google measures it as Core Web Vitals, and visitors feel it. It's also permanent once built, unlike a subscription.
How often should I publish to rank?
Consistency beats volume. One genuinely useful post that answers a real question will out-earn ten thin ones. Publish when you have something worth searching for, not to hit a quota.
