What we learned building a real cat shop online
Running an actual shop teaches you things a demo never will: about chat, useful tools, and why owning the code matters on a Sunday night.
We built catcorner.id as a full store: catalog, cart, QRIS payments, and a cat-portion calculator that recommends products. Here’s what running an actual shop taught us that no tutorial did.
Customers chat before they check out
Half of orders started as a WhatsApp message. So we stopped fighting it and built hooks that turn a chat into an order instead of forcing everyone through a checkout they didn’t want.
The calculator sells more than the banner
A little tool that answers a real question (“how much do I feed my cat?”) drove more sales than any promo graphic. Usefulness converts — and a custom build is what lets you put a tool like that on a site you own.
Owning it means fixing it on a Sunday
When you own the code, a Sunday-night bug is a 20-minute fix, not a support ticket that reopens on Tuesday. That’s the whole pitch, really: fewer people between you and your own business — the reason it’s worth finding a developer who hands you the code.
Frequently asked questions
Why build a custom store instead of using Shopify or a marketplace?
Ownership and fit. A custom store has no monthly platform fee and no per-sale cut, and it can be shaped around how the business actually sells — including chat-first ordering and a product-recommending calculator that off-the-shelf platforms don't offer.
Can customers pay with QRIS on a custom-built store?
Yes. We integrated QRIS directly so Indonesian customers pay the way they already prefer, without routing through a third-party platform that takes a cut of every sale.
What happens when something breaks on a site you own?
Because you own the code, a fix is direct — for Cat Corner a Sunday-night bug was a 20-minute change, not a support ticket that reopens on Tuesday. Fewer people sit between you and your own business.
